Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Washington
The Real ID deadline passed in 2025. Can I still fly domestically with a standard WA license?
No. Since the May 7, 2025 deadline has passed, a standard Washington driver's license is no longer accepted for TSA security checkpoints. For domestic flights in 2026, you must use a Washington Enhanced Driver License (EDL), a U.S. Passport, or a Green Card.
What is the difference between a Standard License and an Enhanced Driver License (EDL)?
A Standard License allows you to drive but is not valid for federal identification (airports/bases). An EDL costs more, requires proof of citizenship, acts as a Real ID for flights, and allows you to re-enter the U.S. by land or sea from Canada and Mexico.
I just moved to Washington. How long do I have to get a WA license?
You have 30 days after establishing residency to get your Washington driver's license. If you already have a valid license from another US state, you usually don't need to take the knowledge or driving tests, but you must pass a vision screening.
Do I take my driving test at the DOL office or a driving school?
In Washington, the DOL rarely conducts tests anymore. You must schedule and pay for both your Knowledge (written) and Skills (driving) tests at a state-approved private driver training school. You only go to the DOL office to pay for and pick up the license after passing.
At what age can I get my Instruction Permit?
You can apply at age 15 if you are enrolled in a driver's education course. If you are not enrolled in a course, you must wait until you are 15 and a half years old to take the knowledge test and get your permit.
Is Driver’s Ed mandatory for everyone in 2026?
Driver’s Education is mandatory for all applicants under the age of 18. If you are 18 or older, you are not legally required to take a course, but you must still pass both the knowledge and skills tests.
Can I take the Knowledge Test online from home?
No. While the test is digital, it must be proctored. You must take it in person at an approved driver training school or a licensing office. There is no 'at-home' option for the official exam.
What constitutes a passing score for the Knowledge Test?
The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 32 correctly (80%) to pass.
Do I need to make an appointment to visit a DOL office?
Yes, appointments are strongly encouraged and sometimes required depending on the location and staffing levels. You should schedule via the 'License eXpress' portal on the WA DOL website to avoid long wait times.
What is a WDL number and why do I need one?
A WDL number is your unique file number in the Washington system (starts with 'WDL'). You need to pre-apply online to get this number *before* you can schedule a test with a driving school.
Can I use my backup camera during the driving test?
You may use a backup camera as an aid, but you cannot rely on it exclusively. You are still required to physically turn your head and check mirrors and blind spots. Relying solely on the screen will result in a deduction or failure.
Is parallel parking still required on the 2026 driving test?
Yes. You must demonstrate the ability to parallel park within 12 inches of the curb without hitting the designated cones/flags behind or in front of the vehicle.
What are the restrictions for an Intermediate License (drivers under 18)?
For the first 6 months: No passengers under 20 (except family). For the first 12 months: No driving between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a driver 25+.
When do the Intermediate License restrictions expire?
The restrictions disappear automatically when you turn 18, or after you have held the license for one year without any collisions or traffic citations, whichever comes first.
What happens if I get a ticket while I have an Intermediate License?
Washington has a 'Zero Tolerance' policy. First offense: Passenger/night restrictions are extended until age 18 and a warning letter is sent to your parents. Second offense: License suspended for 6 months.
How much practice do I need before getting my license if I am a teen?
You must log 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night. Your parent or guardian must sign a form verifying these hours.
What documents do I need to bring to get an Enhanced Driver License (EDL)?
You need proof of US Citizenship (Passport or Birth Certificate), proof of identity, valid Social Security number, and *two* documents proving Washington residency (e.g., utility bill, lease, bank statement).
Can I use a rental car for my driving test?
Generally, no, unless you are listed as an authorized driver on the rental contract. Most applicants use their own car or pay a fee to use the driving school's training vehicle.
Do I need car insurance to take the driving test?
Yes. If you use your own vehicle, you must present a valid physical or digital insurance card. If the insurance is expired or missing, the examiner will cancel the test.
How much does a standard driver's license cost in 2026?
A standard 6-year license is approximately $54 for the issuance fee, plus a $35 application fee for first-time applicants. Prices are subject to legislative change, so check the DOL site for the exact current total.
I failed my driving test. How soon can I retake it?
There is no state-mandated waiting period for the first retake, but it depends on the driving school's availability. However, if you fail multiple times, you may be required to wait a specific period before trying again.
Can I hold a Washington Driver’s License and an ID card at the same time?
No. Under Washington law, you can only hold one valid credential at a time—either a Driver’s License OR a State ID card, but not both simultaneously.
Does Washington offer a digital driver's license for smartphones?
Washington has been testing mobile driver’s licenses (mDL), but they do not yet fully replace the physical card for all law enforcement stops or TSA checks. You should always carry your physical card.
What is the 'X' gender option on the application?
Washington allows applicants to choose 'X' (non-binary) as a gender marker rather than Male or Female. No medical documentation is required; you simply attest to it on the application.
If I am 18+, do I still need to hold a permit before getting a license?
You do not need to hold the permit for a specific amount of time (like the 6 months for teens), but you must have a permit (or be pre-applied in the system) to take the road test.
