Kentucky DMV Exam FAQ 2026

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I get my first driver's license in Kentucky?

Kentucky splits the job between two agencies: you apply at a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Driver Licensing Regional Office, and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) administer every test. You must be at least 16 and start by scheduling a vision screening and written knowledge test with KSP. After you pass both, you return to a KYTC Regional Office to be issued an instruction permit, hold it for the required waiting period, then take the road skills test with KSP. Drivers under 18 go through the three-phase Graduated Driver License Program: learner's permit, intermediate license, then full unrestricted license.
