Tennessee DMV / Driver Services Exam FAQ 2026
Is it called the "DMV" in Tennessee?
Not officially. In Tennessee, driver's license and knowledge-test services are handled by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security – Driver Services (Driver Services). "DMV" is used as a general term across the site because it's the phrase most people search for, but your paperwork, appointments, and office signage in Tennessee will say Driver Services.
How do I get my first driver's license in Tennessee?
In Tennessee you apply through the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Driver Services Division, at a Driver Services Center — the office most people call the Tennessee DMV. Teens move through the Graduated Driver License program: get a Class PD learner permit at 15 by passing the written knowledge test and vision screening, hold it at least 6 months, log 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice including 10 at night, then pass the road skills test for an Intermediate Restricted License at 16. Adults 18 and older are not required to hold a learner permit first — they can apply directly for a regular Class D license once they pass the knowledge test, vision screening, and road skills test.
What is the minimum age to get a learner's permit in Tennessee?
You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a Class PD learner permit in Tennessee. To get it you have to pass the written knowledge test and the vision screening, and applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian to sign the application. The permit is valid for one year from the date it is issued; fees change from time to time, so check the current fee schedule on tn.gov before you go. You must hold a valid Class PD permit for at least 6 months before you can move up to an Intermediate Restricted License, so applying right at 15 gets the clock started as early as possible.
What are the steps of Tennessee's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program?
Tennessee's GDL has four steps. Step one is the Class PD learner permit at 15. Step two is the Intermediate Restricted License at 16, which requires holding the permit at least 6 months, certifying 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience including 10 hours at night, having fewer than 6 points in the 180 days before applying, and passing the road test. Step three is the Intermediate Unrestricted License at 17 after one year on the restricted license with a clean record. Step four is a regular unrestricted Class D license at 18.
What are the restrictions on a Tennessee learner permit?
A Class PD learner permit holder in Tennessee may drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old who is seated in the front passenger seat beside the driver. You also cannot drive between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. at all. Everyone in the front seat must be belted, and back-seat passengers aged 4 through 17 must be belted as well when a permit holder is driving. The permit is valid for 12 months, and you must hold it at least 6 months before taking the road skills test.
What are the rules for a Tennessee Intermediate Restricted License?
With an Intermediate Restricted License you may carry only one passenger, and you cannot drive between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The two limits have different exceptions. The passenger limit does not count a passenger who is 21 or older and licensed, or your brothers and sisters when your parent or guardian permits it. The night restriction does not apply when a parent or legal guardian, or a licensed driver 21 or older, is riding with you, or when you are driving to or from work or a school-approved activity. You must hold the restricted license for one year to advance to the Intermediate Unrestricted License at 17. Six or more points, an at-fault crash, a second seat belt conviction, or a mobile phone violation each add 90 days to that one-year wait.
What documents do I need to apply for a Tennessee driver's license?
Bring proof of your identity and date of birth, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents proving your Tennessee residency, such as a utility bill or lease. Applicants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign the application, and for the Intermediate Restricted License a parent or guardian must certify the 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. Non-citizens must show proof of lawful presence. Document lists change, so check the current list on the Tennessee Department of Safety website before you visit a Driver Services Center.
Do I need a REAL ID in Tennessee?
Tennessee issues REAL ID-compliant driver licenses, which carry a gold star and are accepted as federal identification for boarding domestic flights and entering federal facilities. A REAL ID is optional — you can still get a standard Tennessee license — but if you want the star you must present the full federal document set in person: proof of identity and legal presence, your Social Security number, and two documents proving your Tennessee address. Copies are generally not accepted. Check tn.gov for the current REAL ID document checklist before your appointment so you are not turned away.
How many questions are on the Tennessee written test?
The Tennessee knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions and you are given 60 minutes to finish. The questions come from the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual and cover four areas: traffic signs and signals, safe driving principles, rules of the road, and drugs and alcohol. Tennessee law (T.C.A. 55-50-322) requires that one-fourth of the written examination consist of questions about drugs and alcohol and their effects on driving, so studying the impaired-driving section of the manual is not optional if you want to pass.
What score do I need to pass the Tennessee permit test?
You need a minimum score of 80% to pass the Tennessee knowledge test, which means answering at least 24 of the 30 questions correctly. That leaves you no more than 6 wrong answers, so there is not much margin for guessing. Every question is drawn from the official Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual published by the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, so reading the manual and drilling practice questions on signs, right-of-way, and the alcohol and drug laws is the most reliable way to clear 24 correct on your first attempt.
What happens if I fail the Tennessee written test, and how long do I have to wait to retake it?
If you miss more than 6 questions you fail, and Tennessee requires a mandatory one-day waiting period before you try again — no knowledge test may be repeated on the same day. A testing or application fee may be charged for each attempt, so check the current fee schedule on tn.gov. The online version of the knowledge test is open only to applicants aged 15 through 17, and it may be taken a maximum of two times before you have to test in person at a Driver Services Center. Cheating on a required exam is treated as an automatic failure and can bar you from retesting for a period set by the Department of Safety.
How much does a Tennessee driver's license cost?
Tennessee sets its license fees in state law (T.C.A. 55-50-323). An eight-year Class D driver license is $26.00, and a photo identification card is $10.00. A duplicate license is $6.00 for the first duplicate issued during a renewal cycle and $10.00 for each one after that, so upgrading an Intermediate license to a regular Class D before the card expires is charged as a duplicate rather than a full license fee. County Clerk Partner offices add a $4.00 administrative fee. Learner permit and REAL ID costs, and any per-test charges, are listed on the Tennessee Department of Safety fee schedule at tn.gov — confirm the current amounts before you go in.
How does the Tennessee road skills test work and what if I fail it?
The road skills test is scored by counting errors, and you may not retake it on the same day you fail. Tennessee requires a mandatory practice period before you can retest, and the length of that wait grows with the number of errors you made; a dangerous action is an automatic failure. The exact error thresholds and waiting periods are set by the Department of Safety, so ask your examiner or check tn.gov for the current schedule. Before the test, make sure your vehicle is legal and insured, and practice the maneuvers the examiner scores, including backing, parking on hills, turns, and signaling 50 feet ahead.
I just moved to Tennessee — do I have to retake the tests to transfer my license?
If you are a new Tennessee resident holding a current and valid out-of-state driver license, you only need a vision screening to transfer it — no knowledge test and no road skills test. If your out-of-state license has been expired more than six months, if you are licensed in another country, or if you have never been licensed at all, then the knowledge test, road skills test, and vision screening are all required. Bring your identity, Social Security, and Tennessee residency documents, and surrender your old license at the Driver Services Center. You must obtain a Tennessee license within 30 days of establishing residency, and people transferring a license from certain states are also asked to bring a Motor Vehicle Record from their former state, so check the current list on tn.gov.
How often do I renew my Tennessee driver's license?
A Tennessee driver license or ID card issued to a person age 21 and older is valid for eight years from the date it is issued. That is one of the longer renewal cycles in the country, so check the expiration date on your card rather than assuming a five-year term. You are also required to report a change of address to the Department of Safety within ten days of moving. Renewal options and fees are listed on the Tennessee Department of Safety website, and some renewals can be completed online rather than in person.
Are there special license rules for senior drivers in Tennessee?
Tennessee does not currently shorten the renewal cycle based on age — the eight-year expiration for drivers 21 and older applies to older drivers as well — but check the senior driver page on tn.gov for current policy. What every driver of any age must meet is the vision standard of at least 20/40 in each eye separately and both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses. If a senior driver needs glasses or contacts to reach that standard, the license carries a corrective-lenses restriction. Drivers with a medical condition that affects safe driving may be asked for a physician's statement before a license is issued or renewed.
What is the vision requirement for a Tennessee driver's license?
You must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye individually and in both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses, to pass the Tennessee vision screening. The screening is required for a learner permit, for a first license, and for new residents transferring an out-of-state license. If you meet the 20/40 standard only with glasses or contact lenses, your Tennessee license will be issued with a corrective-lenses restriction, and you are legally required to wear them any time you drive.
What is the legal blood alcohol limit (BAC) in Tennessee?
In Tennessee it is unlawful to drive or be in physical control of a vehicle with a blood or breath alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher, or while under the influence of any intoxicant, marijuana, or narcotic drug. Drivers under 21 face a much stricter limit: driving with a BAC of .02 percent is underage driving while impaired, punished by loss of license for one year, a $250 fine, and sometimes public service work. Tennessee's Implied Consent Law means driving already counts as consenting to alcohol or drug testing.
What are the penalties for a DUI in Tennessee?
A first DUI conviction in Tennessee carries 48 hours in jail — seven days if your BAC is 0.20 percent or higher — a fine of $350 to $1,500, and a one-year license revocation. A second conviction brings 45 days to 11 months 29 days in jail, a $600 to $3,500 fine, two years revocation, and can include vehicle seizure and forfeiture. A third carries 120 days minimum, $1,100 to $10,000, and six years revocation. A fourth or subsequent DUI is a Class E felony with at least 150 days in jail, a $3,000 to $15,000 fine, and eight years revocation.
What is the minimum car insurance required in Tennessee?
Under Tennessee's financial responsibility law, proof of insurance required after December 31, 2022 must show at least $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage — commonly written as 25/50/25. A single combined limit of not less than $65,000 per accident also satisfies the law. You must be able to show proof whenever you drive, and you have to notify local police, the county sheriff, or the Highway Patrol immediately about any crash involving death, injury, or over $50 in property damage.
How can practice tests help me pass the Tennessee DMV exam?
Practice tests mirror the format and content of the real Tennessee knowledge test, which is drawn from the official Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, so you rehearse the same four areas the exam covers: traffic signs and signals, safe driving principles, rules of the road, and drugs and alcohol. Because at least a quarter of the real test is about drugs and alcohol, and because you can miss only 6 of 30 questions, repeated practice on your weak areas is the most efficient way to reach the 24 correct answers needed to pass on the first try.
