Connecticut DMV Exam FAQ 2026

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I get my first driver's license in Connecticut?

You apply through the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Everyone starts with a learner's permit, which you can get at 16 by passing a vision screening and a 25-question knowledge test based on the Connecticut Driver's Manual. Connecticut law also requires anyone who has never held a license here or in another state to complete an 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course at a licensed Connecticut commercial driving school. After you hold the permit for the required period and finish your training, you take the on-the-road skills test and are issued a Class D driver's license.
