Massachusetts DMV / RMV Exam FAQ 2026
Is it called the "DMV" in Massachusetts?
Not officially. In Massachusetts, driver's license and knowledge-test services are handled by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). "DMV" is used as a general term across the site because it's the phrase most people search for, but your paperwork, appointments, and office signage in Massachusetts will say RMV.
How do I get my first driver's license in Massachusetts?
You apply through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). The sequence is the same for everyone: create a myRMV account, apply for a Class D learner's permit, pass the 25-question permit exam and the vision screening, then hold the permit while you practice. Applicants under 18 must also complete driver education, log supervised practice hours and hold the permit for at least six months. Once you are eligible you schedule and pass the road test, and the RMV issues your Class D license.
What is the minimum age to get a learner's permit in Massachusetts?
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Massachusetts Class D learner's permit. Applicants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to give written consent on the application. Because a teen must then hold the permit for six consecutive months before taking the road test, the earliest realistic age for a Junior Operator License is 16 and a half - which is also how the RMV defines a junior operator: a licensed driver between 16 and a half and 18.
What documents do I need to apply for a Massachusetts learner's permit or license?
The RMV publishes a separate document checklist for each credential. For a Standard Class D permit or license you need proof of your identity and date of birth and proof that you live in Massachusetts. For a REAL ID you need four documents: one proving lawful presence in the United States (such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate), one showing your full nine-digit Social Security number (such as your Social Security card or a W-2), and two proving your Massachusetts residency (such as a lease, mortgage statement or utility bill). All documents must be originals, not laminated, and the names must match - if they do not, bring the certified marriage certificate or court order that links them.
What is a REAL ID in Massachusetts and do I need one?
A REAL ID is a driver's license or ID card that meets the federal identification standard; it is marked with a star in the top right corner. Since May 7, 2025 a REAL ID has been required if you want to use your license alone to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal building, although federal agencies are permitted to phase enforcement in. Massachusetts still issues a Standard license, which remains completely valid for driving and everyday identification, and a U.S. passport is always an accepted alternative. Upgrading to a REAL ID requires an in-person visit with the four required documents, and residents without lawful immigration status are not eligible for one.
How many questions are on the Massachusetts permit test, and what is the passing score?
The Massachusetts Class D learner's permit exam has 25 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 18 of them correctly to pass. You have 25 minutes and the test cannot be paused once it starts. Questions cover the rules of the road, the penalties for operating under the influence, the Junior Operator Law, and sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and people who are visually impaired. You can take the exam at an RMV Service Center or online from home with a webcam - a phone or tablet is not accepted for the online version.
Is the Massachusetts permit test available in languages other than English?
Yes. The RMV offers the Class D permit exam in 37 languages, including Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Khmer and Korean, as well as an American Sign Language version that must be taken at a Service Center. Oral exams in other languages can be arranged in advance through RMV Interpreter Services, and extended-time, paper or person-to-person oral exams are available for applicants with documented cognitive or physical disabilities.
How much does a Massachusetts learner's permit cost and how long is it valid?
The learner's permit application fee is $30, and the same $30 applies each time you take the permit exam. A Massachusetts learner's permit is valid for two years, or for the length of your authorized stay in the United States if that is shorter. If your permit expires before you are licensed, you must apply again and retake the exam, so plan your road test well before the expiration date.
What are the restrictions while I hold a Massachusetts learner's permit?
You may drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old, has at least one year of driving experience, and is seated beside you. Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt, and mobile phone use is prohibited. Permit holders under 18 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian - note that this is a different time window from the 12:30 a.m. curfew that applies later under a Junior Operator License.
What does a driver under 18 have to complete before the Massachusetts road test?
A driver under 18 must hold the learner's permit for at least six consecutive months with a clean driving record - any suspension restarts the six-month clock - and complete a state-approved driver education program consisting of 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training and 6 hours of observation. A parent or guardian must also attend a two-hour parent class, which is waived if they completed one within the past five years, and the student must pass the driving school's final exam.
How many supervised driving hours does Massachusetts require for teen drivers?
In addition to the hours completed with a driving school, an applicant under 18 must log 40 hours of supervised driving certified by a parent or guardian. That requirement drops to 30 hours if the applicant completes an approved driver skills development program. The supervising driver must be at least 21 with at least one year of experience, and the hours must be certified on the road test application before you can be tested.
Do adults 18 and over need driver education or a waiting period in Massachusetts?
No. Massachusetts driver education and the six-month permit holding period apply to applicants under 18. An applicant who is 18 or older only needs a valid Class D learner's permit, and may schedule the road test once they hold one and feel prepared. Every applicant, regardless of age, must still pass the permit exam, the vision screening and the road test, and must bring a qualified sponsor and an acceptable vehicle to the test.
What do I need to bring to the Massachusetts road test?
Bring your valid learner's permit, the completed Class D road test application signed by a parent or guardian if you are under 18, a qualified sponsor and an acceptable vehicle. The sponsor must be at least 21, hold a valid license from a U.S. state and have at least one year of driving experience - a foreign license is not accepted, and one person may not sponsor more than three applicants a year without RMV approval. The vehicle must be in good working order with a valid registration and a current inspection sticker, must have a seat for the examiner next to the driver and a rear seat for the sponsor, and must give the examiner unobstructed access to a parking brake capable of stopping the car. A center console without an integrated parking brake will disqualify the vehicle. If the car is registered outside Massachusetts you must show insurance meeting the Massachusetts minimums.
How much does the Massachusetts road test cost and do I need an appointment?
The road test fee is $35 and appointments are required - you can schedule online through MyMassGov up to 60 days ahead. The fee is not refunded if you fail, arrive unprepared, arrive without a properly registered vehicle, are late, do not show up, or cancel with less than 72 hours' notice. You may take no more than six Class D road tests in any 12-month period.
What happens if I fail the Massachusetts permit exam or the road test?
If you fail the permit exam you can apply to retake it through your myRMV profile using the "Retake Knowledge Exam" option; the $30 exam fee applies to every attempt, so it is worth studying the Massachusetts Driver's Manual and practice questions carefully before returning. If you fail the road test you must wait two weeks before retesting, and you must pay the $35 fee again for each new appointment. There is no limit on permit exam attempts, but you are capped at six road tests within any 12-month period.
What is the vision requirement for a Massachusetts driver's license?
You need at least 20/40 distant visual acuity in either eye, with or without corrective lenses, together with a combined horizontal peripheral field of at least 120 degrees. You must also be able to distinguish red, green and amber, and you must not have unresolvable double vision. An applicant whose acuity is between 20/50 and 20/70 with the required 120-degree field may still qualify but will receive a "daylight only" restriction. If you pass the screening only while wearing glasses or contact lenses, a corrective lens restriction is added to your license.
How often do I renew a Massachusetts driver's license?
A Massachusetts Class D license is issued for five years and costs $50 to renew ($65 for a combined Class D and M license). You can renew up to one year before the expiration date and up to two years after it; if the license has been expired for more than two years, you must retake both the permit exam and the road test. Standard and REAL ID renewals can usually be completed entirely online, but upgrading to a REAL ID, renewing a limited-term license, or renewing without a Social Security number requires an in-person visit. Drivers aged 75 and over must renew in person and pass a vision test or present a completed vision screening certificate.
How do I transfer an out-of-state driver's license to Massachusetts?
You must convert your license once you become a Massachusetts resident. Apply in person at an RMV Service Center by appointment and surrender your out-of-state license; Massachusetts takes part in the State-to-State verification program, so the previous credential is invalidated. If your out-of-state license is currently active or has been expired for less than one year, no written or road test is required - you take only the vision screening. If it has been expired for more than a year, you must pass the written exam, the vision screening and the road test. The Class D out-of-state conversion fee is $115. A license from Canada, Mexico or a U.S. territory must be accompanied by a driving record issued within the last 30 days, and applicants under 18 must either convert a junior license or complete Massachusetts driver education.
What restrictions apply to a Massachusetts Junior Operator License?
A Junior Operator License is issued to drivers between 16 and a half and 18. Junior operators may not drive between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For the first six months after licensing, a junior operator may not carry passengers under 18 who are not immediate family members unless a licensed driver who is at least 21 with at least one year of experience is in the front passenger seat. Mobile phone use is banned outright for junior operators. Penalties are severe: a first passenger or curfew violation brings a 60-day suspension and a $100 reinstatement fee, a second brings 180 days plus a retraining course, and a third brings a full year, retraining and complete retesting. Suspensions extend the restriction period and must be served even after you turn 18, and junior operators are not eligible for a hardship license.
Can I get a Massachusetts driver's license regardless of my immigration status?
Yes. Under the Work and Family Mobility Act, which took effect on July 1, 2023, eligible Massachusetts residents can obtain a Standard Class D or Class M driver's license regardless of immigration status. You still have to prove your identity and date of birth, address your Social Security number status, prove Massachusetts residency, and pass the same permit exam, vision screening and road test as everyone else. The license looks identical to any other Massachusetts license. A REAL ID, however, still requires proof of lawful presence, so applicants without it receive a Standard credential.
Where can I get the Massachusetts Driver's Manual and practice questions?
The Massachusetts Driver's Manual is published free by the RMV and can be downloaded or read online at mass.gov, and printed copies are available at RMV Service Centers. Every question on the permit exam comes from that manual, so it is the definitive study source. Working through practice tests built from the same material is the fastest way to find the topics you are weak on - especially road signs, right-of-way rules, the Junior Operator Law and the penalties for operating under the influence - before you pay the $30 exam fee.
What is the official website of the Massachusetts RMV, and how do I book an appointment?
The Registry of Motor Vehicles is part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and its services are published at mass.gov/rmv. Almost everything starts from a myRMV or MyMassGov online account: applying for a learner's permit, scheduling or rescheduling the permit exam and road test, renewing a license, changing your address and ordering a replacement card. Service Center visits are by appointment, and road test appointments can be booked up to 60 days in advance, so book early - popular locations fill up quickly.
