Alabama DMV Exam FAQ 2026

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I get my first driver's license in Alabama?

In Alabama you apply through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Driver License Division, the office most people call the Alabama DMV. Teens follow the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which took effect October 1, 2002 and was amended effective July 2010: at 15 you pass the knowledge test and vision screening for a Stage I Learner License, hold it at least six months, pass the road skills test for a Stage II restricted license at 16, and move to an unrestricted Stage III license at 17 after at least six months in Stage II. The minimum driving age in Alabama is 16. GDL does not apply to applicants 18 and older — ALEA states they may apply immediately for a Stage III license, completing the knowledge and road skills tests in one process rather than holding a Learner License first. ALEA notes that applicants 18 or older who complete all testing at once must bring a licensed driver, proof of car insurance, and a vehicle that will pass inspection.
