Colorado DMV Exam FAQ 2026

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I get my first driver's license in Colorado?

You apply through the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), part of the Department of Revenue. Teens follow the graduated driver licensing (GDL) path: get an instruction permit starting at age 15 (with the required driver education), hold that permit for a full 12 months or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first, log 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night, and then pass the drive test to receive a minor license at 16 or older. Adults 18 and over also start with a permit, but there is no minimum permit-holding period. Everyone must pass the Driving Knowledge Test, a vision screening, and the road test.
